10 Nov Understanding the B Lab Standards: A Blueprint for Purpose-Driven Business
As the challenges facing our world grow more complex, from climate change to economic inequality, the role of business has never been more important. The B Corp movement exists to meet this moment, and at the heart of that movement are the B Lab Standards.
The B Lab Standards define what it means to operate as a responsible, purpose-driven business today. They serve as the foundation for B Corp Certification and provide a globally recognized framework for companies committed to creating positive impact for people, communities, and the planet.
What Are the B Lab Standards?
The B Lab Standards outline social, environmental, and governance practices that help businesses measure, manage, and improve their impact. They are not static. Since B Lab was founded in 2006, the standards have evolved to reflect emerging global challenges and raise the bar for responsible business leadership.
Developed with guidance from the independent B Lab Standards Advisory Council, the standards reflect input from experts across business, government, academia, and the nonprofit sector. This multi-stakeholder approach ensures the framework remains rigorous, credible, and relevant across industries and geographies.
A New Era of Accountability
In 2025, B Lab introduced the latest version of its standards, establishing minimum requirements across seven key impact topics. This shift reflects a growing understanding that real impact requires action across interconnected systems, not isolated initiatives.
The updated standards are designed to help companies move beyond good intentions and toward measurable, meaningful change.
The Two Parts of the Standards
Foundation Requirements
The first step ensures a company is fundamentally eligible for B Corp Certification. This includes meeting baseline expectations around transparency, accountability, and legal structure before advancing further in the process.
Impact Topic Requirements
The second part focuses on concrete action across seven core areas:
Purpose and Stakeholder Governance: Embedding purpose into decision-making and considering the needs of all stakeholders.
Climate Action: Taking responsibility for reducing emissions and addressing climate risk.
Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion: Building inclusive workplaces and contributing to equitable communities.
Government Affairs and Collective Action: Engaging responsibly in policy and collective efforts that advance a more just economy.
Fair Work: Creating quality jobs and fostering healthy workplace cultures.
Human Rights: Treating people with dignity across operations and value chains.
Environmental Stewardship and Circularity: Reducing environmental harm and contributing to a circular economy.
Together, these requirements provide a holistic picture of a company’s true impact.
Different Paths, Shared Values
B Corp Certification is not one-size-fits-all. Companies follow different certification “tracks” based on size, sector, and structure. An equity mechanism also helps ensure fairness across regions, recognizing that businesses operate under different social, political, and economic conditions.
What unites all B Corps is a shared commitment to continuous improvement and accountability.
Why Certification Matters
Becoming a Certified B Corp signals to customers, employees, investors, and partners that your business is committed to more than profit alone. Certification connects companies to a global community of values-aligned leaders working collectively to address the world’s most pressing challenges.
Just as important, certification is not a one-time achievement. B Corps are expected to improve their impact over time, ensuring the movement continues to evolve alongside the realities we face.
Getting Started
The certification journey begins with a free self-assessment using B Impact, B Lab’s impact management tool. It allows businesses to understand where they are today and identify opportunities to strengthen their social and environmental performance.
